Recording responses

It is important to record accurately what is said. Probably the most effective way to do this is to use a form of audio recording. However,

  • some respondents may not like this
  • presence of recording equipment may affect what they say.
  • transcription of recorded material is time-consuming. Several hours may be required to write out precisely what was said in a short time.
Decide on the method of recording before interviews take place. Note that:
  • It is almost impossible to write down accurately what is said and at the same time to pay attention to the speaker.
  • It may be possible to write brief notes during an interview to complement an audio recording.
  • It may be useful to select from a full audio recording examples of responses that particularly relate to the research question(s).
  • A full transcription is not always necessary.
  • Always plan carefully what you will record, how you will record and how you will analyse what you have recorded.

This webpage from University College London offers very helpful guidance on the use of recording equipment.
